The Need

There is a pressing need for effective integration of Assistive Technology (AT) in inclusive classrooms to support student learning. The task of connecting students with disabilities to the general curriculum is challenging. The task grows more difficult in a time of shrinking budgets and limited staffing.

The Opportunity

With the ARRA Stimulus Package,  there exists the opportunity to shape our Special Education Technology and services for years to come. The $12 billion in funding associated with this initiative provides an opportunity to think more broadly about how AT positively impacts our instruction and support for Students with Disabilities.

Assistive Technology was listed as the first in a short list of recommendations for stimulus money spending. The federal government clearly sees investing in assistive technology as a course of action that has long-term benefits.

The Role of CREATE

The CREATE team brings several areas of expertise to the Task:

Assessing District resources, including educational technology and Assistive Technology already in place and needs assessment.

“Best-Practice” professional development training that supports inclusion, marrying strategies and needed AT support.

District and building level AT team development, modeling and coaching.

CORE teacher development – teams of skilled teachers who can model and mentor AT use

Product specific training where needed.

Curriculum integration projects summer and year-round to develop instructional materials using AT tools to support the district’s general curriculum
